WHAT IS A DEBATE?

A debate is a contest of ideas. To win requires logic, fast thinking and the ability to organize facts. It's a kind of game so let's enjoy the game!

In a debate, two teams discuss a topic. The topic is called the Proposition. The Affirmative side speaks FOR the Proposition and the Negative side speaks AGAINST it.

AN EXAMPLE...

So here`s an example. Our Proposition is A car are better than a bicycle.
The Affirmative side will argue that a car IS better than a bicycle, while the Negative side will say that a care IS NOT better than a bicycle.

LET'S START...HERE'S HOW A DEBATE WORKS...

1. Opening Speech from each side
State your main ideas clearly and simply. You don't have to give too much detail. Make your lines of argument clear, listing your main points.
Example:
"We are for the proposition that ...... We have three reasons. First, ..... Next,...... And finally... So, we believe that ......"

2. Questions from the each side (Cross-Examination)
This is your chance to attack the weak points of the other team. When they attack you pay close attention! If the other team has good questions, you will have to think creatively in order to win.
Example:
- You say that (their idea), but are there any good reasons / examples?
- You said that (their idea), but don't you think (your idea)?
- We don't understand what you say. Would you make your point clear?
- You mean (their idea). But in fact (your information).
- How can you say that (their idea)?
- (Your idea / information) Are we wrong in that point? Isn't it (your information)?

3. Answers from each side
Now think creatively and answer the opposing teams questions. Remember to think logically and defend your position! Use supporting evidence and ideas!

4. Closing Speech from each side
This is a chance to repeat the points you made in your opening speech. Also you should clarify the parts your opponent attacked. You may want to mention some of your opponent's weak points. Make sure your conclusion is STRONG and you use supporting evidence.

5. The debate is finished!
Now the Judges will decide who wins.
Here's what the judges will be thinking about...
1. Contents     2. Logical Thinking     3. English     4. Attitude

SO HOW DO YOU BECOME A GREAT DEBATER?
Tips...

- Support your ideas with facts and evidence.
- Attack your opponent's idea with logical reasoning.
- Never agree with the opponent.
- Listen to what the opponent says carefully and take notes.

SO WHAT HAPPENS NOW?

Good Luck!!!!!!
